About Back Rank Mate

The back rank mate is one of the most common mating patterns in chess. When a king has castled but hasn't created an escape square, a rook or queen can deliver checkmate on the back rank. Recognizing back rank weaknesses in your opponent's position — and protecting your own king from this pattern — is an essential tactical skill.
