About Clearance

Clearance sacrifices involve moving or sacrificing a piece to vacate a square or open a line for another piece to occupy or use. A common example is sacrificing a knight on a key square to allow a bishop or rook to penetrate the opponent's position. These elegant combinations show how one piece's temporary sacrifice enables another's decisive activation.

How to use these puzzles

Study the position carefully before moving any pieces. Try to find the best move on your own, then click on the piece you want to move and select the target square. Use the Hint button if you get stuck. After solving the puzzle, use the Next Puzzlebutton in the Current Turn card to practice another position from this theme.
