About Deflection

Deflection involves forcing an opponent's piece to move away from a critical defensive function. When a piece is the only defender of a key square, piece, or mating threat, a sacrifice or forcing move can deflect it and cause the defensive structure to collapse. This tactical motif is common at all levels and requires the ability to identify which pieces are doing important defensive work.
